Municipal Urban Planning: Key to Protecting the Environment in Quintana Roo
Since our first lawsuit, recently won in 2024 achieving the protection of a turtle nesting beach in Cancun, it was clear for us that there is no assessment of the environmental impact of what is decided in the urban planning process of each municipality.
Turns out that if you want to put a palapa you must obtain an environmental impact assessment resolution in your favor, while Municipalities seem to have “carte blanche” when approving thousands of hotel bedrooms. The infrastructure to contain these is not a requirement as per the current law.
It was so evident that a judge ruled that the Congress must amend this, due to a lawsuit of ours. We worked on a citizens initiative and we need help to reach out to all Quintana Roo´s citizens to make them aware of the initiative, its importance and how they can support it. This is the #LeyPokTaPok.
